An Introduction to Our Light & Shadow Atelier
The manipulation of light and the generation of shadows creates a new dimension for experience, discovery, and creativity.
What is it to discover a shadow?
The lights are dim except for the radiance of a bright light projecting shapes on the wall.
As a child approaches the mysterious dark outline, an arm reaches out, a hand opens, and a finger touches the wall.
The shadow is there, but it is also not there.
This discovery creates a differentiation between the visual and physical, a line between what can be experienced with our eyes, but not our hands.
The discovery of shadows allows the mind to wonder and awe at something akin to magic in the young mind.
A younger sibling watches the shadow of an older sister.
Astonished at how a shadow emerges behind a leaf stencil.
“Diamond.”
Our attention is drawn to the light.
What is it to create a shadow?
Once a firm understanding of this phenomenon has developed, the manipulation and creation of shadows adds a new layer to creation and imagination.
A dancing body is joined in dance by a familiar outline.
A building is doubled upon the wall.
An object is waved around as a child watches the shadow follow.
As the building grows, so does the shadow.
Sometimes all we need is our body to create a shadow.
Dancing in the light.
Attempting to reach the tip of the light.
When you create one tower, you create two.
