Ice, Fish and Bingo on a Train!

Posted on January 8, 2016   |   Category: Pre-K Blog   |   Print this page

The Moon Class had an exciting week back! It’s hard to believe we have only been here for one week! Woo! So much has been going on this week!

Ice!

We began the week by finding ice outside! The children were so excited to find big chunks of ice on the playground and in the sand. As you may remember we were learning about the properties of ice through play before the winter break. To find it somewhere besides the freezer was especially exciting. Children brought it inside to paint but it quickly melted! Harper thought it was quite funny that she put a piece of icy wood chip in her pocket and later found it had melted.

"We found ice! Tons and tons of it! It's very sunny and the snow is not melting! That's weird!" -Harper "It's cold!"-Bo

Fish!

During morning meeting, we met our new class beta fish. Friends were eager to see it and made sure to use inside voices and whispers so the fish wouldn’t be scared.

During morning meeting children take turns to move like the animal of their choose. The day our new fish came to join our classroom, several children moved like a beta fish.
“If your name is Jeremiah move like a beta fish!”

Voting For a Fish Name!

After brainstorming to come up with a name for our new fish, we took a vote. We set up jars labeled with the names we decided on. Children used colored jewels to cast their vote. We counted the votes and after two tie breakers the winning name is “Seahorse.” Second and Third place got middle and last name status.

Tennyson votes for the name he choose, “Rainbow Hole.”

Trains!

There was a big interest in building trains this week. It began when Ethan wanted to watch the clock in the dining room with Tennyson to tell him when the “sub-train” was coming. That interest carried into the next day with watching the clock again. Ethan and Keoki worked on building a train that had a loud engine. Ms. Julia shared that in California there is a train called a BART train that goes under water to cross the bay. Children saw pictures and videos of the BART train and the subway and then wanted to build them in the block area.

Ethan and Tennyson watch the clock to be ready for when the “Sub-train” comes. Ethan says, “It will come when it’s on the 12.”
Harper makes a sign for the BART train that Ethan and Keoki built.
Ethan checks out what the sign will look like for his train.
Ethan tell Jaylie about the subway train he is building.

Next Week!

We will continue our exploration of trains and ice. The interest in the properties of ice has sparked an interest in mixing water with other mediums and experimenting. We will continue to mix water and other mediums in the sensory table. We will also experiment by mixing things together to cook tortillas and pancakes. We will make herb scented play dough. Please look for two field trip permission forms in the near future. We will be taking a ride on a MARTA train and a tentative walk to the glassblowing studio on S. Columbia. We will need parent volunteers to assist with these trips. Another opportunity to volunteer will happen each Wednesday. We invite you to come and read to the children at 10:30 for story time. Please choose your child’s favorite book and be our mystery reader for the day. We also invite you to do a cooking activity on Fridays at 10:45. Look for sign up sheets next week that will be emailed. We do not have an oven so cooking projects will consist of making things on a griddle or food that doesn’t need to be cooked liked salad and sushi. Gadgets are always a hit with the Pre-K class! Also, if you have any junk mail envelopes we would greatly appreciate the donation for our writing center! Thanks!

Have a fabulous weekend!
