Happy Thanksgiving! Ephemeral Work Project and More!!

Posted on November 24, 2015   |   Category: Pre-K Blog, Uncategorized   |   Print this page

On Monday, the children were delighted with the game “Duck-Duck Goose.” We changed it up a bit by using different words. Some children picked up on how the words related to each other, for example “Turkey-Turkey Chicken” or Jacob’s “Pepper-Pepper Carrot.” Some children didn’t pick up on the classification at first, but by simply pointing out, “Hey ducks and chickens are both birds,” the children quickly caught on. Classification is an important part of gaining critical thinking skills, literacy and math concepts. Playing a fun game allows children to practice and play with these skills and concepts relating to classifications.

On Tuesday, We explored ice and painted it with water color as part of our study of ephemeral work. The changing weather is a natural exploration of how things we create can change. We went outside to discover ice under the hvac units. After removing our gloves to touch it, children took turns slipping and sliding on it.

“It’s skaty!” -Jaylie
“It’s slippery!” -Jeremiah Later Jeremiah declared, “I’m dancing on the ice! I need more powers. It’s slippery. It makes me fall down!”

After skating on the ice we painted it with water color.

Later we took the paint to the playground in search of more ice. We did not find ice, but we found chalk colored walls on the playhouse. Children began painting the chalk with water color and watched how the color changed when it got wet. Jaylie and Emyrsen added sand to the paint for a different effect.

Ms. Julia: “How does it feel?” Emyrsen: “Cold!” Ms. Julia: “Does it feel sandy?” Jaylie: “Because I put sand in it!”

Later we enjoyed the beautiful fall weather by playing in the leaves!

We will continue our exploration of ephemeral art next week using temperature to explore how materials can change when heated or cooled, melted or frozen. We used hammers to break up our already broken crayons. We will melt the crayons and see what happens.

“Crunch! Crunch! Crunch!” -Tennyson
Emyrsen admires all the sorted colors.
Ms. Kelly enjoyed it too!

We will also continue with our potion making using nature, color and scents.

Beginning the potion table. Close your eyes and smell! “Lavender!” -Macey
