The High Museum: Through the Eyes of the Moon Class

Posted on March 25, 2016   |   Category: Pre-K Blog   |   Print this page

visit to the High…

We prepared by discussing what is a museum and who has ridden MARTA before. We made sketchpads to take with us. We talked about safety and rules in the museum. We anticipated our journey to the High very much!

With much excitement and “inspector hands ready” we were off!

“That”s kinda where I live!” -Darcy “Hold on to you tail feathers!!” -Harper

children’s perspective…

Seeing The High Museum through a child’s eyes gave us as teachers a whole new perspective on art. With open minds, smaller stature to see things grown-ups can’t physically see without crouching low and with unblocked creativity, the children used their eyes and sketch pads to represent their experience.

“Look how many mouths I have!” -Jaylie “Look how many eyes and hands and…” -Harper
“Look at the octopus!” -Jacob “It’s a snake!” -Olivia
“I think it’s puppets.” -Harper “I see a baby.” -Emyrsen
“I was dancing.” -Jaylie
We never thought to see the photos on the legs of the bench.
They found the switch underneath to turn the illuminating bench on and off.

reflection….

Through sketches in the sketchpad the teachers and children reflect on what they remember.

“I saw the mirrors!” -Olivia

“The horse!” Jacob

bringing the experience into the classroom…

In the classroom we set up provocations to take their learning further. What was it about the experience with the concave reflective piece so intriguing? What was most striking about the horse sculpture? How else can we use our sketchpads?

Children use their sketchpads to draw the new blossoming trees.
Inspired by the photo bench, a provocation with tiny pictures from the field trip to create their own collage.
Clay work to recreate 3D animals or other creations.

to come…

In the atelier, Mr. Luis has been working with mirror collages. Next week we will make a concave mirror collage to install in the classroom. We will also make our own photo bench. We will continue to use our sketchpads at the Wylde Center to draw what inspires us!
