Getting to Know Our Materials

Posted on August 12, 2016   |   Category: Pre-K Blog   |   Print this page

Lists:

On Monday children continued making shopping lists in the writing center. It began Friday when August was making a list with Ms. Faith. Soon friends wanted to make their lists using the wood cookie letter for guidance. On Monday, August asked Sam to show him how he can make his own shopping list. We are seeing a great deal of emergent writing in our classroom. Many children are eager to write lists, letter and make cards for family. They are excited to practice writing their name on their play plan each morning and are proud of their progress.

“Show me how to make a list Sam.”
Hazel makes a card for Cora. She finds the letters C / O / R on the wood cookies to help her write the letters to spell her sister’s name Cora. “Is their one more letter?” She asks. Together with Ms. Julia, she finds the letter A.
Rowan writes his name.

Dinosaur Habitat:

After seeing the interest in dinosaurs emerge, with the help of Mr. Louis we set up a dinosaur habitat in our classroom. Children shared their knowledge about dinosaurs as they created play scenes with their dinos. Other children made dinosaur playgrounds with blocks.

“The spinesaurus and tyrannosaurus are different because the spinesaurus has spikes and the tyrannosaurus doesn’t. They both have the same footprint.” -Chiezue

More New Materials

We received our new sensory table we’ve been waiting for. The children were so engaged in mixing colors and filling containers. Hugo had fun mixing “Gredients” and “Grediento!” into his containers. We also opened the matching game.

by Pre-K Team
