Meaningful Play Leads to Meaningful Learning

“I can do hop-scotch! Look!”

Rose said, running to the numbers written in chalk on the sidewalk.

Friends followed, racing through the gate to stop at the number one in a box.

“You start right here!” Lila points while talking to her friends.

Some friends gather around the number “1“ and we being to chant..

1..2..1..2

…

one foot.. two feet.. one foot.. two feet

…

open-close-open-close

“I did it! High five Mrs. Loren!” Lila cheered.

“TEN!” Shouted Uma with a smile.

“Should I hop fast or slow? Faster!” Maddie said, hopping quickly down the sidewalk.

After the four girls went, they were eager to “do it again,” but they needed to take turns. We started a chant to help predict the order of friends participating.

Lila, Uma, Maddie, Rose..

Lila, Uma, Maddie, Rose..

It became fun to predict who was next.

“It was Lila’s turn, and now it’s mine. Then Maddie, then Rose.”

Uma explained while pointing to her friends.

Then, some boys came along.

“Now there’s boys, and girls,” Rose informed us.

So, we started a chant for them too!

But this chant was different than the others with four things to list, like:

“open, close, open, close”

“1 foot 2 foot, 1 foot, 2 foot”

This chant had all 6 boys included!

Felix steadily jumped from one foot to two.

Owen moved quickly and excitedly through the boxes!

Reed jumped so high between boxes.

Donovan danced his way from 2 to 10. He liked starting from two feet.

Alexander took great pride in hopping from one foot to two without losing his balance.

Dominic eagerly jumped in, counting all the way to 10!
