Welcome Pre-K Friends

Posted on August 8, 2016   |   Category: Pre-K Blog   |   Print this page

Exploring a New Space

On Monday we welcomed new and old friends to an entirely new classroom. We focused on exploring the space and materials.

The typewriter was a big hit! Sam and August liked figuring out how it worked.
Billy spent a great deal of time at the loose parts table exploring the materials.
Effy and Asher enjoyed creating dinosaur habitats.

Dinosaur Families

Many friends enjoyed the dinosaur figures this week. They became families. Habitats were created for them as well as museums.

Khaleesi suggested they were twins. Suddenly, the enclosure became a house that the family of dinosaurs lived in, brothers, sisters and twins.
Khaleesi, Hugo and Samantha were pretending the dinosaurs were growling at each other. Ms. Julia suggested building them a house. We gathered materials to build. “These match!” Hugo noticed some of the dinosaurs were the same.

Clay

Geri wanted to engage in dinosaur fun. “Do we have a people to be a dinosaur hunter?” We brought out some clay where she created her own person figure. This brought other children into clay play. Some children had never experienced this kind of clay before. Children smelled and squeezed the clay before enjoying their own pieces.

The next day we continued with clay work. Geri used the garlic press to make hair the day before but today she made pasta. “It’s a pasta and hair maker.”
Joseph: “Are you going to eat hair?”
Geri “I will make a lot of pasta.” Joseph: “For a potluck?”
They decided to make food for the potluck. Joseph made pizza.
Cassie also made a pizza for the potluck.

What’s Next?

We will bring in dinosaur books and create more elaborate dinosaur habitats. We will continue getting to know the routines of the classroom and each other.

by Pre-K Team

The pre-k class is made up of 22 children ages 4- to 5-years with 2 educators. The teacher/student ratio in the pre-k class is 1:11. The preschool and pre-k classes will also be supported by the Atelierista (Studio Teacher) who will work with small groups of children in the studio
